Take 5 With a Microgreen Grower
This edition of Take 5 with a Farmer we chat with Sam and Michael from Seriously Green Farms about people that have had the biggest impact on their journey so far, and what advice they would give to someone looking to the agriculture industry!
What is your least favourite task to do on the farm?
Cleaning trays weekly. Each one needs to be scrubbed down by hand, it takes a few hours now that we do over 75 trays a week!
What is your first farming memory?
Sam used to collect earthworms for her mud piles when she was around 4, I think that counts. It is the basics of farming after all- good compost!
What is your current pet peeve around the farm?
Not having enough space! “Micro”greens really can be grown in micro spaces, including our 300 sq ft garage, but as we continue to grow, the space gets smaller and smaller. Not a bad thing to complain about.
What do you like to do outside of farming?
We like to continue to spend our time being active and getting outside. You can usually find us walking, camping, hobby gardening or reading a good book.
Who is the person who has had the biggest impact on your farming journey thus far?
Is it cheesy to say eachother? We definitely have skills and passions that compliment one another. It enables us to motivate the other when there’s a farm task we don’t want to do.
What is one misconception that you hope to change in the industry?
Commercial scale farming doesn’t have to come with a big environmental footprint, you can be zero-waste, compostable, environmentally friendly, local, etc, you just have to make the effort to do so.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to get into the agriculture industry?
Anyone can do it. Don’t let the fear of it not working out stop you from farming your own food. The earth and your body will thank you!
G’day is a platform that connects you with local farms and producers, allowing you to buy your groceries straight from the folks that produce them. From produce to protein, wine to cheese, you’ll find it on G’day!
